CeLRRd and HUCODAN jointly conducted a 2-day staff orientation program on the project titled ‘Access to Justice for All ‘funded by the GF at Hetauda, Makawanpur district. The objective of the orientation was to familiarize project staff ranging from central to district level on the project components, staff structure, modus operandi, reporting requirements, among others so that the project team would be capable of yielding the project result – protection of the poor people especially women, girls and traditionally marginalized people from criminal violence besides improving their access to justice from formal and informal institutions – efficiently and effectively.
A total of 30 project staff including the CeLRRd and HUCODAN central teams participated in the orientation whereas CeLRRd central team oriented about the project.
This project covers the districts Ilam, Panchthar, Okhaldhuga, Morang, Bara, Parsa Makawanpur, Kathmandu, Rupandehi, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur. Victims of Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Parties engaged in Disputes, Prisoners and Social Workers are direct beneficiaries whereas Police, Women Watch Group, Representatives of Political Parties/local civil society Organizations and Local Civil Society Organizations are the indirect beneficiaries. This will be the joint efforts on access to justice. Similarly, Dalits, Madhesis and Aaadibasi janajati groups are at the center of this project. The project started on December 1, 2015 and will end on November 30, 2018.
Specifically, with the implementation of this project victimization/abuse/ violation of rights of the aforementioned groups will be addressed justly, disputes will be resolved ensuring win-win situation for both the conflicting parties ultimately contributing to community peace and social harmony; prisoners will receive counseling, legal information from lawyers, their appeals will be filed in courts, they get updated about their cases and are provided with information on final decisions. Also, social workers will be empowered to the extent that they will emerge as registered community mediators, police personnel will be contributed to enhance professional expertise with due sense of accountability towards the communities they serve. Similarly, women watch groups will be enhanced their professional expertise, the representatives of political parties and the local civil society organizations are also believed to enhance their professional expertise.
Under the project, a total of 25 new community mediation centers will be established in 5 districts of this project whereas a total of 16 community mediation centers located in Morang, Bardiya and Makawanpur will be continued with supports. SGBV/DV victims will be provided with legal service, 800 prisoners will receive legal aid. Similarly 2593 cases will be mediated. Similarly, 11,200 awareness raising sessions will be in 41 VDCs.
Once the newly established CMCs complete 12- month cycle, they will be handed over to concern local authorities with the belief that they will sustainably functioning even after termination of this project.
