CeLRRd, as per the Strategic Plan 2009-2013 is extending its programs and coverage to all five regions of Nepal. Besides DanidaHUGOU which is the major funding agency for the coming five years, other donors like UNDP and TAF have also been supporting us in our focus initiative, Mediation. Thus, UNDP supported community mediation is being executed in the four districts, Udayapur, Kailali, Kang and Surket. Against such a backdrop, CeLRRd organized an eight-day Trainers’ Training program in Chitwan from 18 June to 25 June 2009. All district coordinators and trainers including 20 participants had participated in the ToT.
In the inauguration Session, on behalf on the organization, Mr. Kumar Sharma Acharya Former President, CeLRRd welcomed all participants and Mr. Rammani Gautam, an Executive Committee member highlighted the objectives of the ToT program and Mr. Sudeep Gautam, Program Coordinator of Mediation collected expectations from the trainees. Few expectations were like, learn about facilitative approaches of conflict management, and prepare him\her as a complete trainer for community mediation program, build skilled human resources at community level for the resolution of community disputes, and so on. The formal training part was started by Mr. Sudeep Gautam with the introduction of conflict, Dispute and Community. He discussed on the steps and reasons of community dispute with an exercise of community interdependence. Mr. Sharma discussed on the practices, structure, approaches and strategies of dispute resolution, and Mr. Gautam dealt more on national and international practices of mediation. At the end, a check-out session was conducted that helped the participants gain the consolidated information of each day session and even helped the facilitators to evaluate their understandings on the important matters of the day, the queries on the subjects of the day, positive aspects of the training and finally recommendations of the day. Discussions were also held on condition and challenges of judicial system of Nepal, legal provisions of mediation and roles of mediators, fundamental approaches to mediation, communication, listening and facilitative skills.
The model role play session covered issues like digging out interests of parties, issues of dispute, identify stakeholders and carryout the options. All the participants participated as mediators in mediation process at least three times. Thus, a total of 21 hours of training was devoted to the role play. Human Rights, Legal Rights and Social Justice were the additional topics of the training. Finally, Mr. Kishor Silwal, Director, CeLRRd formally announced the training session to a close, thereby thanking everyone for his/her interactive and effective participation in the overall events of the ToT.
