In the last 5 years, CeLRRd represented the cases of more than 40 victims of pedophilia and dozens of foreigners were convicted by Nepalese Courts on the charge of Pedophilia. Despite the conviction, CeLRRd has experienced that most of the actors of justice sectors including police, district attorney, and court officials still lacks the awareness on pedophilia and that boys can be the victims of sexual abuse. Hence, CeLRRd has been continuously conducting training for actors of justice sectors on the concept of pedophilia.
On 25th May, 2019, CeLRRd organized 1-day training on Conceptual Clarity on pedophilia in Kavre with an objective of enhancing the capacity of Court Personnel so that they will support the victim during Court Procedure. The training developed their knowledge on pedophilia, national and international laws on child sexual abuse, problems and challenges to prosecute pedophiles in Nepal and judicial trend on providing justice to victim and survivor children on these types of cases. Advocate Kapil Aryal, Assistant Professor at Kathmandu School of Law and Advocate Shukhadev Sapkota facilitated the sessions.
Altogether, 27 individuals including 12 representatives from Court, 10 from Nepal Police, and 5 from District Attorney Office took participation in the training. Though the training was targeted to the Court Official, due to the less number of Personnel in Kavre District Court, officials from Nepal Police and District Attorney Office were also invited to join the training.
Issue was completely new for most of the participants. In the program, even Police official shared that they have been organizing awareness program on commercial sexual exploitation of children under “Police in Community” program but this issue is completely new to them.
