Life was really hard for Ram Bahadur Chaudhary, 18, of Pratappur VDC-3, Kailali from the early childhood. His mother had left her husband’s house as he married to another woman as the second wife, and started to live with her parents. Ram Bahadur was only one child and his mother died of some illness. Even then his father never took interest in him, and also denied the fact that he was his son. On the other hand, due to poor financial condition of his maternal uncle, he sent him to an orphanage at the age of five. Ram Bahadur, somehow adjusted for few years in the orphanage with a great pain for having had to stay in the orphanage without being an orphan, he said later.
Although, his maternal uncle continued to talk with his father about his upbringing, but each time he showed disinterest. At the age of 13, he went to India with his friends in search of work and remained there for five years. Though he was working well, his boss started to ask for some identity proofs which he did not have any. He returned to Nepal and asked his father to help him in having his citizenship certificate issued. But it was to no avail. With no other alternative left, he filed a compliant against his father in area police office, Tikapur. The police office referred the dispute to the Community Mediation Center of Pratapur VDC.
During the initial stage of mediation session, his father refused to accept him as his son, but after several attempts of effective facilitation and communication, his father realized his mistake at the end. This not only helped him get a citizenship certificate but also gave a family to him. They got reunited and in the follow up observation visit, it was found that both the parties were leading their lives happily. When asked how he is feeling, Ram Bahadur’s father said, “Mediation helped me open up my eyes and as a result my family is now complete after 18 years .Thank you Mediation Center “.
