Sabitri, 23, married to a middle class family of Kalika-8, Bardiya had a happy marital life initially. She had two children and life was going smooth until some years. As days passed by she started noticing changes in his husband’s behaviors. He started to become arrogant and abusive, and even would beat her for every reason. In the hope that she should give him some more time to improve, she waited for the next four years when in fact, all others were suggesting her go for divorce. He had sold all the properties including all the gifts she received in their marriage. The situation was becoming intolerable day by day and she was in a dilemma as to what to do next.
As she had heard of the community mediation service established in her place, she decided to register the dispute to the community mediation center, but at the same time had reluctance. She explained, “It was a personal issue and I felt I would be bringing a shame to my family, but then as I was assured that the whole process would be kept confidential, I decided to try it out.”
In the mediation session, they got the opportunity to expose all their problems and emotions. Her husband told that he was very much disturbed because of their poor financial condition, and as a result whole family and especially his wife were victimized. He repented for his behaviors and Sabitri also committed to provide a helping hand to improve their situations. Further, her husband also agreed to treat her well and support her in all household activities.
Following the mediation, Sabitri opened a small shop in front of her house, and her husband went for foreign employment. Their two children, now, go to an English medium school. Moreover, the family is making savings to purchase a small land. During the follow up visit, she expressed her gratitude for helping her in improving their relationship and situation.
