Ranju Thapa (Name Changed) had been facing domestic violence. At plain regions of Nepal, the culture of dowry is deeply rooted though giving and taking dowry is punishable by law. Just after few months of her marriage, her husband and in-laws started to abuse her physically and mentally for not bringing dowry with her. When violence became frequent, she sought help from her neighborhood. But their effort to mediate them didn’t have sustainable impact. They again started to abuse her. When torture became unbearable, she filed a case. When she didn’t get any response from it, she registered a case at Police Station. During its investigation, it was proved that she was suffering from domestic violence. Police called her husband and tried to mediate between them but in vain. She then went to district court and from where she was referred to CeLRRd. Case ran under Domestic Violence in which her husband was proved guilty. District Court gave a decision against him to pay NRs. 5,000 fine and NRs, 25,000 as compensation. She now feels that she got justice.
