Shanta Giri, 21, of Thulosirubari VDC-4 in Sindhupalchok district was married for three years . She had secondary level education and had been teaching in a private school. Her husband used to work in a hotel in Thamel, Kathmandu. In many occasions, he had demanded money from in-laws and already taken NRs 150,000 for different headings including buying motorbike and foreign employment. Just after six months of their marriage, her husband changed his behaviors towards her, and started torturing her physically and mentally. One day as she returned from school, she found that her in-laws had closed the front door, and thus she was made to leave the house. As she searched for her husband in Kathmandu, she came to know that he had remarried with a girl of their acquaintance. After confirming about this, she with the help of CeLRRd filed an FIR against her husband and his second wife in Sindhupalchok police . The police arrested them and filed bigamy case against them. The court was also sensitive in the case, convicted them up to 3 years punishment, and charged Rs 25,000 fine to be deposited individually. This happened to be a milestone case in which the district court punished both the offenders with optimum jail term and fine. Though her sorrows can never be undone, she feels a sense of justice done to her.
