Narmaya (Name changed) of Khajurgachhi – 8, Jhapa was married to Hiralal Sharma (Name changed) of Katari-6 in Udayapur district. Since the day she tied conjugal knot, Hiralal started to abuse her physically and mentally for not bringing adequate dowry with her. He even burned her private parts with cigarette butts and thighs with paniyo (serving spoon). She endured all these tortures in the hope that everything would be right over days. One day, her family beat her to unconsciousness and threw her on the bank of a river thinking that she was dead. Villagers rescued her and took to a primary health center at Katari.
Later on she came in contact with Katari Community Mediation Center, which referred her to CeLRRd-Udayapur. CeLRRd’s Rapid Response Supervisor then rescued her and coordinated with Women Rehabilitation Center. Even after that her husband issued threats via mobile phone that he would burn or kill all her close relatives indiscriminately if she initiated steps against him.
On 25th June, 2014, with the support of Victim Legal Aid Lawyer of CeLRRd-Udayapur, CeLRRd registered a case under domestic violence against Hiralal and family members at Udayapur district court. The next day, an order was issued for interim protection. On 11th October, 2014, court convicted him with NRs 5000 as fine.
