Nepal is undergoing post-armed conflict transition. Although structural inequality was on the agenda of the proponents of armed conflict, by the time the conflict was resolved through peace agreement, the conflict had negative impact on the long standing harmonious relationship, and community cooperation besides escalating distrust among community people on the basis of their identity or ideology.
With an objective of contributing strengthening community peace and harmony for sustainable peace, CeLRRd conducted series of dialogue sessions among community leaders adopting people to people approach. The sessions provided fora to bring communities leaders together regardless of their political or religious ideologies, caste or other dividing factors; to tie them for a common social cause to minimize VAW cases in their respective communities, and to strengthen their relationship by developing trust and empathy among them. A total of 59 dialogue sessions were organized in between March 2014 and March 2015, at 15 VDCs and 5 Municipalities of Morang and Udayapur districts in coordination with local administrations..
The sessions were facilitated by local resource persons from different GOs and NGOs proficient in issues of VAW. Experts dealt with concept of VAW, its’ existing situation in respective district, legal provisions on VAW, rights of VAW victims, procedures and challenges of justice institutions, and other concerned issues. The fora were even used to evaluate ongoing project activities, and to plan for better design and implement upcoming activities.
Participants were selected from various CBOs, local networks and groups like LPC, women’s federation, mothers’ group, youth club, paralegal committee, women’s network, school, political party, and community mediation center. They were selected from different local groups and organizations with a view that they could own up the issues and activities and take required initiatives accordingly.
