Harka Bohora (name changed) a farmer of Pipaladi VDC- 8 in Kanchanpur district married Radha ( name changed) as his second wife under the pressure from his parents when his only one son died in an accident and his first wife was undergoing prolonged mental shock following the death of her son. Following his second marriage too, both of his wives had been living with understanding. However, as days passed by, there started dispute between his parents and his second wife – Radha over several domestic and behavioral issues. Radha followed modern way of life while her-in-laws were with traditional mindsets. Harka sided with his parents in such misunderstandings.
Later on, her husband and in-laws started to inflict mental and physical torture on her. As such acts of torture continued, she finally registered an application in local mediation center located at Pipaladi, which called her husband and mother-in-law Parbati (name changed) to discuss the issue. Mediators Puspa K.C, Hari Prasad Bhatta and Bhagawati Chanda performed group mediation on the complaints of Radha. During mediation session, Radha viewed that she would not live with her family bearing physical and mental torture. Her mother-in-law also had her story to tell. She blamed that Radha didn’t treat her as her mother in- law and that she also didn’t help her with their household chores. With the help of mediators, later on, they reached an understanding wherein it was agreed that Harka wouldn’t beat Radha, would provide her proper food and care and that Radha would respect her in-laws and live harmoniously.
After the agreement they returned home giving thanks to mediators. It was memorable moment for the mediators. During a follow up visit to the Radha’s family, both husband and wife were found working together in their field. They were satisfied with their agreement. Conflicting parties told that mediation was effective for solving their problem. The behaviour of the mediators was also polite and professional. Satisfied, they said that they would recommend their disputing neighbors to go to mediation centers.
